Literally LOL Funny…Mindy Kaling

IMG_7184Can I just say how much I adore this girl?!?!?  Yes, I have a girl crush on Mindy Kaling…at least according to my hubby.  She is funny (literally laugh out loud funny), talented, smart, witty, successful AND pretty!  What’s not to love and envy????  I have always enjoyed her writing and characters on The Office and The Mindy Kaling Project.  So, when I saw her book “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)”.  I knew it was next on my reading list.  I am glad I did because it is the funniest book and had me laughing in the middle of the night in my bed which disrupted the hubby’s snoring cycle.  Her story about growing up really mirrored part of my upbringing.  We are both from an ethnic background but raised totally Americanized.  I really enjoyed her journey through childhood that had her parents reeling her in to her traditional roots but she fought back for her pop culture desires.  She is a successful person and deals with some glass ceiling issues in this funny biographical tale.

What do you think of her writing?

What do you think of her personality?

In a humorous way, she deals with the naysayers of being a successful ethnic woman who doesn’t fit the norms of Hollywood, how do you feel she handles it?  Do you admire/admonish her for it?

Do you have experience with the tug between being from a “traditional” culture and embracing pop-culture?  What is your perspective?

Do you want to read her next book?

First off, I think your book club is a great idea. Could you have imagined us having book chats at Duncan? I hope you don’t mind my presence here.
Next, I L O V E Mindy Kaling! She is smart, funny, and selfdeprecatingly real. I loved her first book and am excited for Santa to bring me the new one. If you enjoy memoirs by comediennes I highly recommend Tina Fey’s Bossypants and Amy Poehler’s Yes, Please. My life would be perfect if Amy Sedaris would pen her autobiography. Right now I’m reading Notorious RBG about my favorite SCOTUS Justice and The Heart Goes Last by Margaret Atwood.
    Keep up the blogging!

Loved this book and it went by so fast! I have never watched The Office or The Mindy Show so I didn’t know what to expect (I will watch all on Netflix when I’m done reading the next book!). I really enjoyed her personable writing! It was almost like hearing from a close friend or sister because I had a lot of the same views and she did and also not being the super popular chick in high school! It’s refreshing to see that none of that matters and you end up fine anyway!

Her personality is great! It’s like she doesn’t care what people think of her and she’s somewhat conscious of it, but it doesn’t rule her life. She’s so comfortable in her own skin even if she doesn’t admit it, you can just tell from the way she writes.

I admire her for persevering through failures at the beginning of her career and see that she’s just fine where she ends up! It’s refreshing to know that there are normal people in Hollywood! I imagine Tina Fey this way as well. They stay real and know that the Hollywood life is not what it seems to be.

I did relate to a little bit of her traditional culture, where your parents expect you to do everything they want and uphold an image they can be proud of. I think she did this, while also doing what she set out to do. I really do want to read her next book to see what she elaborates on, what changes in her life from the first book to the new one, and just to have some laughs! Great choice for the book club!

I totally agree. She is an amazing writer and an amazing woman! If I had a daughter, I would use Mindy Kaling as an inspiration for being a successful woman while still being original and true to yourself. She is an absolute genius as a writer and actress. I really loved how she transformed some mundane events in our lives into funny, witty moments in everyone’s childhood. She just has a magical way of telling stories.

I can’t wait for her next book too! I really think you will like her show…very fun!
